A police officer directs traffic on Interstate 95 south of Fredericksburg, which was presumed to have been the killer's escape route. Authorities immediately set up roadblocks at exits between Fredericksburg and Alexandria, but after a three-hour crackdown that snarled traffic, they were unable to head off the suspect.

Police did not release any evidence directly tying the Spotsylvania shooting at an Exxon station to the string of sniper attacks that have killed seven and wounded two, including a 13-year-old boy. Friday's attack did have several similarities, however: a single shot was fired, and the shooting took place in broad daylight at a gas station, the same place where the latest victim was killed Wednesday night in Manassas.
